I'm pining for some slingmeet action and as my babies are now 6 months old (yes really!), and Joy is going to be up visiting over Easter, we are going to have a Slingmeet --- YAYYYYYY!!!!

Hi All,

Just a quick note to say that although I'm not arranging group slingmeets at the moment, I am able to get out and about and if anyone wants to meet up and talk slings, I'm happy to do so.

I do have two bigger kids (Age4 and 2) to keep an eye on, so enclosed spaces with stuff for them to do is essential.

I'm really enjoying slinging two and if you are in Leicester town centre and see a mad woman with a baby on her back and one on her front with a 2 yr old in a pushchair- that'll be me, say Hi :-)

Sorry everyone- due to illnesses and pregnancies etc we didnt get round to sorting it for the end of August.

We are having a belated meet on Friday 5th September at Bede Island play park from 11am. it's off Western Boulevard opposite the bridge over the canal at Mill Lane.

Parking is horrendous in the area tho- so probably best to park elsewhere and walk down.

I'm going for a scan later that afternoon so will be leaving at around 13.45.

Summer is here - at least some days it is.. let's hope for a nice one on Thursday 31st.

With Emma in her 3rd trimester with her twins, and me still getting to know mine, and learning to manage my four 3 and under, our meets will be very relaxed affairs for the foreseeable.. a fun social time held in public parks/places, to let kids play, have a chat and get help/support with babywearing.

Monthly meet to be held on Thursday 31st. Abbey park 11am onwards.

Meet at the cafe (most likely be outside for the sake of keeping kids happy)

November midmonth meet

Social - off to the farm :o)

It's the perfect time of year to take our precious little (and not so little) ones out to see the farm animals and their young!
Our midmonth social will be at Gorsehill City farm on Saturday 17th from 11am onwards.

Come and meet the animals (including rare breeds) have a picnic (or onsite cafe bought, lol) lunch, and enjoy socialising with other babywearers while our children enjoy playing in the gardens/nature trail/playground. Hopefully as well as sharing wearing tips and tricks, we will hopefully get some people interested in babywearing :o)

Gorse Hill is a small scale, humane and organic horticultural farm, which practoces community involvement, humane treatment of animals and co-operative working. Nice place to support :o)

The coolest hipp cross carry

This is a wrap carry to be done with a longer wrap.. It makes a rebozo shoulder and is adjustable on the fly for nursing like in a ring sling, but so much more supportive than a regular hip carry as it has the great support of a cross carry.

I like the baby on my left hip, so I take both tails and cross at my left waist, either cross on top. I leave the rights tail longer, bring it behind me back and over my right shoulder and let it hang straight down. then I bring the other side of the cross up from left hip to right shoulder and do the slip knot around the other vertical tail.

First slingmeet stall...

the event today was great. Not very busy at all.. which meant plenty of time to really talk about / help people out with carriers.

Earth Mothers is the new social group starting up in Leicester aimed at mothers who are interested in environmental awareness, recycling, fair trade, etc.

We had a few people take away information and try carriers for the first time. Lots of fun and great to share babywearing with a receptive audience!

Instead of our usual midmonth meet we have a fantastic opportunity for sharing about babywearing with a willing audience.

We have been invited to hold a stall at an event that has been organised to launch a new social group 'Earth Mothers'. This group is aimed at mums interested in things such as environmental awareness, fair trade, recycling, and an holistic and more natural approach to child rearing. The event takes place at Brocks Hill Environment Centre in Oadby on Sunday 16th September 10.00-1400.

Wrapalicious August meet...

This was our second month meeting at our homes - much more cosy and friendly than before.. and a lot less time spent dashing after wayward toddlers!

We were joined by a couple of new mums this month.. one of whom had a go wrapping her toddler son in a Vatanai. These wraps are great for learning new carries - as they are so thin.. you can really feel your way around the carry. We were able to demo a bit and chat about the Brocks hill event in a couple of weeks time.

I managed to make it to the meet just before the end after a difficult trek through town.. thankfully we had a spare Ring Sling ready for my 27 month old to catch a lift on my front after an hours walking, while sleeping 7 month old stayed wrapped up on my back.

Solveig grabbed a chance to wrap up her increasingly independant 1.5 year old.. who looked blissfully happy up on mums back in a Didymos indio =)

Emma had her 10 month old safely snoozing in an Ellaroo wrap while she taught a JBC.

Slingmeet 26th July

After speaking to Joy yesterday we concluded that as no permanent venue has been found (and we don't want to risk getting caught in the rain again!!) the best option would be to meet at one of our homes for now.

I have a good sized enclosed garden (although a bit messy!) that the older children can run around in if the weather is good - and my living room should be large enough to accommodate us!

NINO no more...

Ironically, after the talks we have had regarding our place as a NINO group and whether we ought to remain a part of NINO. We had decided to potter along for a month or two and see where parent NINO went.

It has now been announced that NINO has been dissolved. We are, for the time being, an independent babywearing tots group.

I will update as I can. Promotional materials can be printed from slingmeet for the time being.

Wrapping - some help for starting out..

These links are all from the wrapping choosing and using forum at thebabywearer. There are so many resources for wrapping available online, but knowing what to look for, nevermind where to look is a gauntlet if you are a new wrapper needing to know *now*.

Wraparounds/simple pieces of cloth (SPOC) - stretchy wraps, hybrids, german style woven (GSW) selendang, rebozo/perraja, pareo, kanga/kitenge, shawl:

Photo threads - brands, carries etc.
Links, photos, FAQ, abbreviation list, sizing, looking after your wrap.

Wrap carries table - what size you need, shoulders used and where to find instruction.

Who needs a middle marker? Quick and easy method of finding the centre and getting the rails organised, even with a 5metre wrap!

Getting babywearing out there..

Leicester slingmeet is nine months old, now it's time for advocating. As well as coming up with a more user friendly name, we are going to be getting our group known to new mums and relevant professionals in the city. Publicising the group on the web/in real life settings, holding regular classes, having literature and a renting library available.

Please share contact details for slingmeet at your local surestart, playgroups, breastfeeding groups, surgeries etc. If you would like literature to leave on site, or have a venue/group interested in having some babywearers visit to talk about babywearing or demonstrate slings, please do email!

Also feel free to post a link to this blog where you can, we have our details on a few sites, including
TBW, Slingmeet and Mamatoto, but it would be good to be on sites that aren't already babywearing specific. =)

Meet Thursday 3rd May (inplace of April meet)

OK, so we are going ahead with last weeks meet, this week. Seeing as lots of people are interested/back/better :o)

Still haven't sorted a new "home" for us, but for this week we will be touting ourselves about the New Walk Museum. It's a nice easy walk from the station, free (although they will take a donation, lol) Has plenty for LOs to see, space to demo, ample opportunity to have babywearing en masse *seen* as well as a cafe, babychange etc. Also - just remembered - it has something called the *Discover* section aimed at 2-8yr olds, plenty of space in there to mill, and wrap etc, while the kiddos find stuff to do!

It's straight out and over the London road from the station, walk up the main road (Waterloo road) and it's right in front of you as you come onto New Walk. Map.

There is limited onsite parking, you'd have to come from the other side of New walk..would possibly be easiest to park as you would for the YMCA, it's just a 2 minute walk from there!

I know there will be a couple of sling sellers there, as well as other natural family living vendors. It would be great to be a living advertisement right where there's slings for sale, and have a babywearing get together at the same time.

The supermeet went ahead as planned - it was great to see so many mums, dads, babies (8weeks-tween), bumps and slings!! What a fantastic day - the children seemed to enjoy themselves in the soft play (had to grab a slow passing one to try slings with)

There was a fab mix of carriers to look at play with/stroke lovingly, from well loved wraps, lush DIY ABCs, to silky slings - we had fun playing with them all. There wasn't nearly enough time to try everything though, so we'll have to do it again! :o)

March supermeet: with WRBW

We're doing something a bit special this month :o)

We've managed to get a date together in March for a super-meet between the
Leicester Slingmeet and the WRBW. (White Rose Baby Wearers)

We'll be talking slings and all things babywearing at MegaKidz at the Megacentre in Sheffield. Safe for the not-happily-worn through coffee and chat kids to run around and play in safety while the mamas and sling babies talk!

What happens at Leicester Slingmeet?
Our group has been set up to provide support and teaching for babywearers, or those interested in babywearing. Slingmeets offer caregivers and children the chance to meet up and share their knowledge of and passion for babywearing, test drive babycarriers, and learn new tips/tricks for enhancing use of their sling.

Monthly Slingmeet:
The monthly meet is an informal mix of socialising, demonstrations and learning. Each month we will have a natter with others about most things parenting - with a common topic of the challenges of wearing babies at different ages/stages and the benefits of different types of babycarriers/slings at each stage. More experienced wearers are available for demonstrating slings for newcomers to babywearing, and all have the opportunity to get to grips with a new babycarrier/carry, or to improve and perfect our favourites, alongside those who can offer help/suggestion, or just an extra set of eyes :o)
The point of these meetings are to promote safe babywearing, share tips and tricks, and help newer wearers to carry their babies easily and comfortably. Any aspects of babywearing and related parenting issues are welcome for discussion, all members are encouraged to share individual experiences, offering advice and help. These are the times to grab someone to answer your questions!

Weekend social:
Mid month meets are on the weekend, so that those who can't make the Thursday meets could come along. Also a great opportunity to bring Dads and other family members along to have a go at babywearing. Just a relaxed afternoon to visit one of the family friendly places in our city: City farm, museums, parks - anywhere we can think of that would be even more fun with a sling! These days out will give us all another chance to get out to do some public babywearing en masse - at all the places buggies become a nightmare and babycarriers can shine =)
Usually the second Saturday afternoon of the month.

Promoting babywearing:
A bit of advocacy/teaching. Hoping to hit antenatal groups, birth centres, sure start groups, mums and babies groups. Anywhere you think could benefit from a visit from a babywearer or two! We are happy to come along and demonstrate various styles of babycarriers.

Sling Pool/Resources:
Our pool of donated slings and babycarriers has been born! We've received some wonderful donations which will be made available to all who wish to try them.
Also soon available for download will be posters and business cards with TBW/Slingmeet details info...
